Basel is situated on the Rhine river, bordering France and Germany and is the third largest city in Switzerland. It is the city of art and culture with around 40 museums and hosts Art Basel (international art fair). If you only have one day to spend in Basel, I’ve listed a few suggestions.
Where to Stay: Hotel Victoria is just across the road from the train station! It’s ideal if you plan to take a flight the next day as there is a bus within a close walking distance which takes you directly to the airport. They offer a discounted ticket for museums and free tram and bus rides. The rooms are very spacious.
What to do: A visit to Foundation Beyeler art museum will be well worth your while! Right now there is an exhibition of Bacon and Giacometti which goes on until September. It’s easily accessible by regular tram services. Tram 2 from Basel SBB train station towards ‘Eglisee’ and change at Basel Badischer Bahnhof (train station) to tram 6.
Point of interest: Next to the Tinguely Museum is the Tinguely Brunnen (fountain). Sit, take a break and watch the mechanical movement of the sculptures spurting water.
Where to eat: You are probably hungry by now so, for lunch or dinner check out Atelier restaurant where you can enjoy a meal in a lovely artistic atmosphere and friendly staff. The food is very good and they serve vegetarian options. It’s part of a hotel complex Der Teufelhof Basel which is in the old town. It’s accessible by tram or 15 minutes walk from the train station.
